 Course Overview & Welcome

Welcome to Civics, aka American Government class!   This required 9th grade course in the high school social studies department will help you to understand how responsible citizens productively engage in a political system (Course Essential Question).  The course is comprised of four units including:  Foundations of Government (Unit #1), The Constitution of the USA (Unit #2), The Three Branches of Government (Unit #3), and Parties, Elections and Citizenship (Unit #4).  The units blend and unfold to tell the story of how and why American government was developed, how the Constitution changed and continues to change society and the lives of citizens in the US, how the branches of government lay the foundation for American government, and how individuals, groups and organizations influence the political process.  Throughout the course you will be able to learn about the American governmental system by using the textbook, MaGruders American Government (William A. McClenaghan, Pearson, 2011), by viewing historical background and politics in video clips and internet sites, by reading and interpreting primary and secondary sources to better understand the ideals upon which American government was founded, and by classroom discussions that engage students and allow voices to be heard.  Have a great school year!
