1:1 iPads

Beginning in August 2015 each student at Hershey Middle School will be issued a school purchased ipad for use during the school day. Students pick up their ipad at the beginning of each day in homeroom and then return their ipad at the end of the day. Their iPad will become their personalized learning device. Students are encouraged to customize and use their devices to meet their own learning needs.

HMS 1:1 Philosophy

We believe technology has the power to transform learning and education. We utilize two research based instructional frameworks to support changing instructional strategies that are essential in a 1:1 digital learning environment.

The HEAT framework focuses on changing instruction through Higher Order Thinking, Engagement and Authentic Learning Experiences through the use of Technology.

We use the SAMR model. "SAMR, is a model designed to help educators integrate technology into teaching and learning, was developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, Ph.D.. The model aims to enable teachers to design, develop, and integrate digital learning experiences that utilize technology to transform learning experiences to lead to high levels of achievement for students."

HMS 1:1 Goals

  • To engage students in an authentic, higher order learning environment through the use of technology
  • To equip teachers with the tools necessary to differentiate instruction for more personalized learning
  • To promote student passions and ownership over learning
  • To equip students with the digital literacy and citizenship skills to be a productive citizen
  • To cultivate self-directed life-long learning, critical thinking and collaboration using digital communication and productivity tools.

Institutional Apple IDs

Apfel - Mac Vs PC

All middle school students will be participating in a one-to-one iPad initiative, and creating an Apple ID will allow them to download apps and other educational content. The District email will allow students to set up an institutional apple ID, validate certain applications, and serve as a form of communication.  Parents of middle school students will receive an email from Apple with steps for setting up a school or institutional Apple ID using their child's school email account. This allows us to offer Apple IDs to those students under the age of 13 and still provide protection and control in compliance with Child Online Privacy & Protection Act (COPPA).  The creation of institutional Apple IDs is encouraged but voluntary. If you received TWO emails from Apple, we apologize for any added confusion as the email may get sent out twice if the account is not created. If you chose to participate and set up an institutional apple ID for your student please use the most recent email from Apple.
